History of Orthodox Christianity (3 Part
Series)
Our series views the foundation and growth of the Orthodox
Church through historic milestones and geographic locations connected
to specific eras, examining the formation of major aspects of the Holy
Tradition.
- Part 1: Beginnings
Our journey begins with the founding of the Church, the
spread of Christianity to "nations" by the Apostles, the
Gospel and the institution of Sacraments.
- Part 2: Byzantium
After the stabilization of the Church, the journey continues
through the period of the Nicene Creed, Patristic Scriptures, Divine
Liturgy and Icons. During this same period, however, the official
division of East and West is witnessed and concludes with a gradual
rift in matters of faith, dogma, church customs, politics and culture.
- Part 3: A Hidden Treasure
The Church becomes the only institution perceived by
Greeks as the preserver of their national identity during 400 years
of Turkish rule. By the end of the 19th century, a worldwide Orthodox
community is born and the Church expands its influence to major
social and philanthropic concerns.

Holy Sacraments Series:
- Baptism & Chrismation
Holy Baptism and Holy Chrismation, two separate and distinct
yet intimately-related Sacraments that have been celebrated together
since the very early years of Christianity. Immersion in water-along
with Chrism, the sanctified oil conveying the seal of the Holy Spirit-define
the Orthodox tradition by which the Church opens its doors to new
members. Two Sacraments and three baptismal rites, taped at St.
Barbara Church in CA, are colored with emotions that extend beyond
faith and religion.
- Holy Matrimony
A specific rite of marriage appeared as early as the
4th century, but it wasn't until the 14th century that the sacramental
rite of Holy Matrimony was formalized with a blessing, and the marital
union sealed during the liturgy in joint communion with the Holy
Eucharist. This video presents the ritual, step by step, and explains
every symbolic act such as the union of hands, exchange of rings
and crowns, the common cup and the "Dance of Isaiah."
- Holy Unction
The Orthodox Church has always viewed body and soul as
inseparable, and for that reason has stressed the necessity for
preserving both in good health. The Sacrament of the Holy Unction
is an enduring sacrament of faith for healing the sick and forgiving
sins, with the most familiar celebration of the sacrament on Great
Wednesday of Holy Week.
- Penance
The Sacrament of Penance (Confession) is one by which
Orthodox Christians, who have repented their sins, come before God
and the Church to seek reconciliation and ask for divine forgiveness.
The faithful make their confession and receive absolution from God.
This video provides a presentation of the sacrament, as well as
an incisive examination on issues of sin, repentance, preparation
for confession and the role of the priest in the sacrament.
